A note from the Valley Secretary

Dear brothers,

Another year has passed and the time has come for our new officers to assume their duties and prepare for the events for the new Scottish Rite year. 2012 is an especially exciting year for the Valley of Syracuse.

May 23, 2011 is the date of the Public Installation ceremony for the new officers of our Valley.

The Presiding Officers for 2011-2012 are Central City Lodge of Perfection Thrice Potent Master, Ill\Craig E. Cobb, 33°; Central City Council Princes of Jerusalem Sovereign Prince David A. Barnello, 32°; and Central City Chapter Rose Croix Most Wise Master Lawrence W. Egnaczyk, 32°; and for 2011-2013 in the Central City Consistory Commander –In – Chief Ill\ Lynwood J. Bennerson, 33°.

I urge every Scottish Rite Mason to make every effort possible to attend the Public Installation of the new Valley Officers. My brother s these gentlemen labor very diligently to lead our Valley each year. They deserve your support of their efforts.

This will be my last Word article as your Commander-In-Chie. It doesn’t seem possible that two years could fly by so quickly.

There is really nothing for me to say except “thank you” to all who have helped make my term as C-I-C a rewarding and enjoyable journey. A special thank you to my officers, Lynwood Bennerson, Robert Tyrrell, Richard Powell, Garry Visconte, Garret Wikoff, George Black, James Swan and Mike Gates.

Most of all, I would like to thank all the brothers who have participated in our programs and degrees. I feel we had a successful two years and I am confident that the next two years will even be better.

My best wishes to Lynwood Bennerson and to each and every one of you.

Chapter Rose Croix

Brother Knights Rose Croix,
This is my last message to you as Most Wise Master. The year has passed more quickly than I expected, and thanks fill my heart for the privilege of serving among you.
First, I thank all the Brothers who took part in the Feast of the Paschal Lamb. Your effort to honor our departed brothers and their families reflects well on you as men and officers in the Chapter and the Valley. I especially thank Ill. Fred Greene for serving as Most Wise Master. His leadership in the feast always inspires me as a model of the best in our ritual work.
I thank my brother officers in the Chapter for their diligent service over the past year. I applaud the announced nominees for Rose Croix’s elected offices as good men who will lead the Chapter into its future. You have done a great job, and I believe next year will be an even better year for Central City Chapter.
I thank my brother presiding officers for the work we accomplished together. Ill. Carl Fahrenkrug’s compliment that the executive board contained more than enough skill and wisdom to accomplish any task that came before it is right on point. It was a pleasure to share leadership with Tom Santmyer, Milo Peterson and Sandy Samson.
Finally, I thank you, my Brothers in this Valley. I originally petitioned this Valley to receive its degrees to accompany my son, Adam, through the process of becoming a 32̊ Mason. (We went through our Master Mason degrees together, too.) Scottish Rite was Adam’s dream. I never expected to get very involved. Here I am, after serving a year as Most Wise Master, thanking you for the honor of being an elected officer. I have had more enjoyment than frustration. I have seen the best this fraternity has to offer. I have received your concern, your support and your laughter. You not only kept my Monday evenings busy, you made me look forward to being among you. I hope and pray you will keep building this Valley and welcome more men and their families into this great family of Scottish Rite Freemasons.

Brethren, Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

The month of May is now upon us and we begin the business of a new year with the events: the Reunion Dinner, Annual Meeting and Public Installation of officers for the 2011 – 2012 year.

I take this opportunity as I step down as the head of the Council Body this past year to express my gratitude to all those that have served and supported the works of the Council in its endeavors to serve the Valley. I thank the Council officers for their service and willingness to “jump in” to support others when the need arose. I thank the Secretary and the office staff in support of the Council and, for keeping me on the straight and narrow path. I thank the Council's mentor, Illustrious brother John Fuller for his guidance and advice. I thank the other concordant Bodies for making this an over-all enjoyable experience.

And, finally, I am looking forward to enjoying the works of the coming year knowing that the officer lines within all of the Bodies will carry on in the tradition of brotherhood of this, the Scottish Rite fraternity.

Notes from the Children’s Dyslexia Center CNY

Welcome to My World

When I wrote you last, we were looking forward to spring- as of this writing, we are still waiting for spring and it is time to begin to think about our end of year activities.

You may have noted the change in the name of our Center. I imagine that most of you are aware of this new change from Lexington. The name may come from Massachusetts but most of our support comes from you (as it will need to in the future) and we truly do appreciate it, no matter what our name.

Bryce continues to move forward and is working on levels 3 and 4 (we have 5) dealing a lot with prefixes and suffixes. He and his mother have already asked about a third year, which he would truly benefit from. The availability of this will depend on whether we can get a full class of scholars and how many paid tutors we can afford to keep. In an ideal world, every child at the Center would have the option of three years, but due to numbers we are not often able to offer the third year.

If you know of someone with a Bachelor’s degree with the time and interest who would like to participate in the upcoming training class, please, have them give us a call or send us an email: Ph. (315-736-0574) or

Thanks to your support we have been able to achieve near maximum capacity and have kept to our goal of not having children on the wait-list for more than an academic year before we offer a child a spot in our program- not every Center can achieve that goal.

The end of the 2010-2011 year is quickly coming to a close. Our Annual Meeting and Election of Officers will be held Monday, May 09th. More information to come.

I would like to acknowledge those brothers who have spent countless hours behind the scenes. First and foremost, Brothers Milo Peterson and James Swan who have worked long and hard reorganizing the office and developing new procedures which will ensure greater efficiencies in our day to day operations.

Ill. Brothers Gary Hartman, John Curtis, John Fuller and Jim Swan have been working closing with the four presiding officers in strengthening and developing our Valley’s leaders.

I cannot express in words how appreciative I am for these fine and dedicated brothers and the work that they are doing for our Valley.

Please mark Saturday, April 16th to join us in Utica as we confer the 26th, 31st and 32nd Consistorial Degrees. If any would like to ride up, please let the office know. We will car pool from Memorial Lodge and will make sure to make room for you.

Council Princes of Jerusalem

Brethren, Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

April has finally arrived and, for me, not a moment too soon. The events scheduled for the month of April should be easier to attend without the obstacle of unfriendly weather to overcome. The schedule for this month includes the Feast of the Pascal Lamb on the 7th of April at Memorial Lodge in Syracuse and the presentation of the 26th, 31st and 32nd degrees with the Valley of Utica and Norwood in Utica where-in we shall welcome the new 32nd Degree brothers into the ranks of the Rite.

I hope you can attend the events and enjoy the presentations and the fellowship with the brothers of Syracuse, Utica and Norwood.

Brethren,
The deadline for The Word is about two weeks before the start of a new month. That means our “news” is old, such as the news that Ill. Paul Fritsch fell and suffered a broken hip in February. The good news is that Bro. Fritsch is recovering from his injury and will celebrate his 95th birthday in April. The March issue of The Word carried an announcement that there will be a party to honor Paul on Wednesday, April 13 at 12:30 PM. This will be a catered event. Reservations are required for the $10 meal. The phone number to contact is (315) 673-9142.

A little tradition in our Valley bears repeating here. One night I wondered what happened when the presiding officer read the list of dignitaries present, including the honorary 33rd Degree Brothers. The moment the officer read the name “Illustrious Paul Fritsch,” a chorus of boos echoed around the lodge room. What was going on? Doesn’t a brother, a senior brother at that, deserve a little respect? Paul smiled and gave a gentle wave of his hand to this unusual greeting. I finally mustered the courage to ask what caused this apparent show of disrespect. Paul explained the source of the tradition and added that anyone who says “boo” when his name is read in the Valley of Syracuse is honoring friendship and brotherly love. On that note, I say “happy birthday and boo” to Brother Paul.

We have brothers who experienced injury, illness, surgery, complications from surgery and death of loved ones since the last Hospitaler column. Take a few moments during your day to direct a prayer to Deity for the men in the Valley and their ladies who experience the challenges life puts in their way. Remember the Brotherhood we share and the needs all brothers and their families have for health, security and hope.

IT IS OFFICIAL: THE LEARNING CENTER HAS A NEW NAME

“Children’ Dyslexia Center Central New York”

As result of Scottish Rite Learning Centers, Inc. decision to rename all of its sponsored learning centers our new center name is Children’s Dyslexia Center Central New York. The new name better identifies our Center to what is really is. It is a Learning Center dedicated to assisting children struggling to deal with Dyslexia. Our mission remains the same; “To assist Children with Dyslexia to master reading and writing skills improving their ability to gain a quality education and succeed in life”. We are one of several Scottish Rite Learning CentersCharities operated by the Supreme Council Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite for the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the United States of America.

The Sixth Annual Timothy O’Connor Slater Walk-A-Thon and Chicken Bar-B-Q to support the learning Center is scheduled for Saturday September 24, 2011. Plan to attend. Walker sponsors and walkers are needed. We are working to publish the program again in 2011. Advertising purchasers are needed to help us reach our fund raising goal in 2011. Walk commences at 10:00 a.m. and the Chicken Bar-B-Q is served at the completion of the Walk. Bar-B-Q cost is $10.00 per person.

I would like to express my appreciation to Brother Allan Ferguson for the find job he has done in presenting, for the first time, “The Last Full Measure”. I congratulate all those who participated.

We have a full plate of exciting programs in March beginning with the conferral of the 14th degree on March 14th. Saturday, March 16th, we join the Valleys of Utica and Norwood for the conferral of the 16th and 18th degrees at our Masonic Memorial Center.

Also, please note April 11th on your calendar for our annual “Feast of the Pascal Lamb”.

Chapter of Rose Croix

A good “thank you” always has a place in Masonic conversation. I thank the Brothers who put on “The Last Full Measure” at our February 21 gathering. Their excellent work always makes me feel proud to be a Scottish Rite Mason.

The Chapter of Rose Croix will confer the 18th Degree on Saturday, March 26, after the Council of Princes of Jerusalem confers the 16th Degree. Bro. Lawrence Egnaczyk, our Chapter’s Senior Warden, will direct this degree. I thank Larry for putting the time and effort into organizing this degree because it involves men of three different Valleys: Norwood, Syracuse and Utica. Working together in this way demonstrates the unity of Brothers. (For more on unity, check the Great of Light of Freemasonry, Psalm 133, the reading used for our First Degree as Masons.)

Finally, the Chapter is preparing for the Feast of the Paschal Lamb in April. The officers decided months ago they will present the Feast as the elected and appointed line of Rose Croix. This draws from a tradition the Chapter’s officers carried on in the past. Masons are men who value tradition, but traditions like this emphasize our obligations to serve the Craft, the Rite and the world. Keep up the good work! Effort like this strengthens every Body in the Valley.

Council Princes of Jerusalem

Brethren,

Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

February did continue winter from where January left off. However, the “Work” continued. The Trustees Meeting with the representative from Manning and Napier in attendance was held on the 7th of February wherein he presented an updated report on the Valley's investment portfolio. Directly following that presentation, the monthly Executive Committee Meeting was convened and the on-going business of the Valley was critiqued and discussed. The financial reports, Profit & Loss and the Balance Sheet, were presented by the Valley Treasurer. Upcoming degree presentation planning status for the month of March was critiqued. The continuing efforts on the Mentoring and Membership programs were discussed. Hospitalar report was presented. These, plus other subjects of concern to the Valley operations: charitable functions supported, future special meetings/events, office secretarial issues, etc., are regularly on the agenda for discussion that are germane to the timing of the Executive Committee Meeting being held. I include the preceding information as some in the Valley may wonder what the works of the Executive Committee may entail. Reference the schedule for the month of March, come and witness the degrees to be presented and hope that March actually does “go out like a lamb”.

Lodge of Perfection

Greetings from the LOP! This has been a long, rough winter, and I want to give much thanks and credit, to the cast of the Seventh Degree. They not only gave a
remarkable performance on February 28th, but they came out on three cold, snowy nights for rehearsals. Due to schedule conflicts, some cast members had to change roles after already have learned lines for a different part. So, this cast really came together to make this work. Again, I give them all my thanks! As this degree had not been done by the valley in ten years, I hope every member who needed it, got to see it.

With winter not yet over, I know the last thing we want to think about is next November. However, I want to remind all members to start thinking about candidates for the next Veteran's Program. Every year we award one Mason, and one Non-Mason. This person should not be someone who is just a great Mason, or military person, but someone who is involved in their community, helps others, and displays the characteristics that we strive for in Masonry.

With the spring coming up, there are many degrees, and other work to be done in the Valley. All members, new and not-so-new, are encouraged to get involved. It is never too early, or too late, to start participating in Valley events and programs.

Many brother's have helped me, and the LOP this year, and it has not gone unnoticed. Thank you! And a sincere thank you to Gary Hartman - we could not have gotten this far without you.

A New Name For Our Learning Center

Greetings from Central New York

As the headline indicates and the quote from Lexington below tells you, the Board of Governors has been discussing a new name to replace Central New York 32nd Degree Masonic Learning Center for Children.

“Each Board of Governors may now take the steps necessary to rename their individual Centers within the prescribed guidelines. The existing Corporate stationery is being redesigned and will be provided to each Center in late January or early February of 2011. The same redesign applies to our informational brochures and other paraphernalia. “

“I am also pleased to inform you that the Teddy Bear will continue to be the logo for the Corporation.”

At its January monthly board meeting, after much discussion, the board settled on the following: Children’s Dyslexia Center Central New York

However, questions were recently raised after seeing the article that is in the February Northern Light issue. See page 14 to see why. The article seems to contradict the prescribed guidelines each Learning Center was provided.

When clarification is made, we will use our new name. There may be a slight variation by the next news article. Stay tuned!

Hopefully you will be ready to prepare for the next Timothy O’Connor-Slater Walk for Dyslexia in September. We are organizing early and will be looking for help advertizing and gathering walkers in April-May. Look for our new design on the flyers and pamphlets.

Notes from the CNY Learning Center

Welcome to My World

To all of our “sweethearts” out there- Happy Valentines and St. Patrick’s !!

It has been an interesting start of the New Year with weather and illness. Everyone is back but we keep getting interrupted, thanks to Mother Nature.

One of the major things that we do after the December holidays is our mid-year assessment which gives us an idea how well the children are retaining and using the phonemes (sounds), rules and tools that the tutors have been presented to them this year. This assessment is done on a program that we have on the computer and covers all the visual, auditory and tactile areas the children have been working on.

One of the nice things that happens is a graphic display (circles, with the goal to get as much as possible to the outside) and specific words and concepts written out that the child had difficulty with. This allows the child, tutor and family know exactly what areas the child needs some reinforcement in and what still needs to be presented.

Bryce, who I have been telling you about, did quite well on his assessment. He worked methodically and consistently mastering many areas. Though he still needs reinforcement in some areas, he did not require any materials that he has covered to be totally presented again in levels I, II, and III. Good job on his part and that of his tutor. We know he will continue to work hard as he progresses through level III and into level IV (we only have five levels!!)

We are looking forward to spring but know that the children and tutors will be working hard throughout the long winter to achieve their goals.

This only happens thanks to the fact that you are behind us all the way.

Brethren,
Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

Winter picked up in January where December left off. February may continue. But, I digress. January was busy with the holding of the “Brother Bring a Brother” event on the 10th. The program for the evening was presented by the Right Worshipful, brother Richard Powell, 32 degree, DSA, member of the board of trustees of the Robert Livingston Library. It was an informative program, complete with power point presentation. I like “visuals”!

The 4th Degree was presented on the 17th of January, beginning the journey of the George Black Class candidates. And, rehearsals for upcoming degree presentations occurred on Jan 24th and Jan 31st.

February will kickoff with the Trustees meeting and Executive Committee meeting on the 7th, the President's Day with family and friends where the “Last Full Measure” will be performed as the evening program and, the month will finish with the presentation of the 7th Degree on Feb 28th.

Also, keep our Military in your hearts in minds, those far away, those close to home and especially those in harm's way.

Brothers and Sublime Princes, The press deadlines for a monthly newspaper like this leave out many things that happen between the deadline and when the article appears. Such is the case with this article.

Many things happened in the Valley of Syracuse in December that only now appear in print in February. At the top of the list is our need to share condolences with the families of Bros. Ed Sinay Sr., Reggie Butler, Harry Alheid, Roy Neer Jr. and Robert Morse, all members of the Valley who laid down their working tools during the last month of 2010.

The harsh weather of December took its toll on Leo Searfoss, Sr. MSA, who fell while assisting a Knights Templar project collecting money for the Salvation Army. Leo fractured his wrist and needed surgery to set the break. He is recuperating at home. Bro. George Laird spent a short time in an area hospital after a fall in Syracuse during the record-setting snows. We continue our prayers and best wishes for all our brothers and members of the Scottish Rite family who experienced hardship, injury or sickness during the end of the past year.

The last item relates to the sending of dues notices. Ill. Jim Swan, the Valley Secretary, shares with me the occasional story of a Brother in his 70's, 80's or 90's who asks for a dimit from Scottish Rite. The story often includes things like illness, reduced income from pensions or investments and increased medical and living expenses. The brother may have moved away and is not active in a Master Mason lodge in the new community, let alone the Valley of Syracuse. Driving at night is a serious issue for others. The end of the story comes as the Brother says he no longer feels like he can carry out his obligations or good intentions as a member of his lodge or the Valley.A brother’s request for a dimit is a Masonic right, but we hear the stress of the situation and want to our best for Brothers who have been loyal to the Craft and the Valley for years.

One thing the Hospitaler does–without revealing any details–is help a Brother in such circumstances maintain his good standing in the Valley if he is a member in good standing with his Lodge. We believe that loyalty to the Craft and the Rite deserves our loyalty in return–if that is a Brother’s situation in life and desire.

Lodge of Perfection

Greetings from the Lodge of Perfection. I want to thank all cast members for their outstanding performance of the Forth Degree, on January 17th. I would like to encourage all brothers to attend these degrees, even if you have already received them. You can gain something new each time you see it. Many of our newer brothers are participating in degree work, and that is very good for them, and our Valley.

I also want to remind the cast for the Seventh Degree that February 28th will be here soon. Rehearsals are scheduled for January 24th and 31st, at 7:00pm. If you have any conflict with the degree date or rehearsals, please contact me at 315-243-8784, or santmyer@oswego.edu. If we need to, we will schedule a rehearsal in February.

This degree has not been done by the Valley in about ten years. It is an interesting degree, and I would suggest that any member who has not seen this degree, join us on Feb. 28th.

Scholarships

ABBOTT SCOTTISH RITE SCHOLARSHIPS 2011 APPLICATIONS AVAILABLE

Applications to apply for the 2011 Abbott Scottish Rite Scholarship Program are available in the Valley of Syracuse Business Office. Applications can be obtained by written request, letter or e-mail, a telephone call, or a personal visit. Members, Children, Grand children of current and deceased members, members of the Masonic Youth Groups, (DeMolay, Rainbow, Triangle, Constellation) and graduates of the Dyslexia Learning Center Program are eligible to apply for one of these scholarships. You must be attending school full time, completing one or more years of college study by June 2011, and have an accumulated grade point average of 2.75 or higher on a 4.0 grade scale to apply.

Completed applications, including all of the required associated documentation, must be received at the Valley of Syracuse Office before close of business at 4:00 p.m. on March 24, 2011 to be considered.

Brother Richard Powell has planned a Brother Bring a Brother evening where he will present a number of interesting tidbits of information regarding Scottish Rite Free Masonry. The program is scheduled for Monday, January 10th.

Petitions for membership are always welcome. So, please “talk up” our great Scottish Rite.
If you have not done so, please mark your calendar for Feb. 21st. The play “The Last Full Measure” will be presented for the first time in our Valley. More details to follow.

Our degrees are coming up. Please make every effort to attend and don’t forget your passports.

Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

December and the hustle and bustle of the Holidays are behind us for another year. We shall now begin the Work for the New Year. As you can see on the schedule for this month is the quarterly meeting of the Trustees and the monthly meeting of the Executive Committee immediately thereafter to be held on January 3rd. Remember that all the Officers of the four Bodies should make the attempt to attend Executive Committee meetings. As you progress in your “line”, you should become aware of the proceedings that occur in this meeting.

On January 10th, the Brother Bring a Brother event will be held and the program to be presented will be informative. And, on January 17th the 4th Degree will be presented for those Masons that have chosen to begin their journey in the Scottish Rite. If at all possible, we should attend the 4th Degree presentation to demonstrate our support to the candidates.

Keep our military that is scattered around the entire world in your prayers. And let us hope that Old Man Winter does not start the new year off as he did the month of December!

Brothers and Sublime Princes, We learn that prayer is the first Masonic thing we do when undertaking any great or little venture. The Hospitaler’s duties in part are to put a human face and voice to the Valley’s prayers. This month I ask you to include some brothers and their families and friends in your prayers as we all undertake our task in living the year of 2011.

The first brother I commend to your prayers is Bro. Don Stray and his wife Faye. Don has been an active Shriner–clown, driver, and goodwill ambassador for the Craft–until post-polio syndrome slowed him down. I first met Bro. Don many years ago, and his sense of humor and energy have always amazed me.

A brother few of you may know is Sherman Kumpf and his wife Barbara. Sherm was a member of the Valley of Cortland before it joined the Valley of Syracuse. Neither Sherm and Barbara are able to walk and their days are filled with medical challenges. A prayer to the Great Architect in their behalf would be most welcome.

Another brother we do not see in our Valley gatherings is a man I see every week in church, Bro. Izzie Woodford. (I know Izzie’s real name, but I have sworn to keep that as a Masonic secret.) Brother Izzie is well into his 90's, continues to climb the hill on his farm in DeRuyter and do as well as a man his age can. He thanks God–and we can thank God–that life continues to be pretty good for him.

Lodge of Perfection

Greetings.
We got hit with winter early this year, and I hope everyone is getting through it without to much difficulty. I also hope that everyone's holiday season went well! I would like to start out this month by recognizing, and thanking the LOP Officers.

Senior Warden Leon Bulriss, Junior Warden John Melnyczuk, and Capt. of the Guard Rolf Schwedes. These men have not only fulfilled the obligation of their office, but they volunteer, and step up and assist whenever needed. I do not say it enough, and I want them to know their efforts are known, and appreciated. Others have not met their obligations, and that too is noted. I also want to thank those who have stepped in when help was needed, so that we were able to complete our work.

I want to remind the cast of the forth degree that we are conferring the degree on Jan.17th, and we are looking forward to your continued good work with this degree.

LOP is also performing the seventh degree on Feb. 28th, 2011. We will be rehearsing on Jan. 24th, and 31st. Because this degree has not been done by the Valley in ten years, I would like the cast to start going over the script. All roles have been cast, and all cast members should have received your script. If you haven't, please contact me, and I will get you a copy. I would also like all cast members to double check your schedule, and if there are any conflicts with BOTH rehearsals, and degree date, please let me know.

I also want to thank the LOP mentor, Gary Hartman. His assistance has been invaluable, and is greatly appreciated.

Abbott Scottish Rite Scholarships

In 1922, a college scholarship program was inaugurated with an initial appropriation from Supreme Council funds. In 1932, Leon M. Abbott bequeathed additional funds to establish an Education and Charity Fund. The first Abbott scholarship was awarded in 1951

For many years, the scholarships were presented to journalism students at selected universities throughout the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction. In 1984, it was voted to expand the scholarship program by awarding grants to children and grandchildren of Scottish Rite members and to young people active in the youth groups affiliated with the Masonic fraternity. In 1985-86, the first academic year, funds were allocated for 68 scholarships.

Current 2011 applications are available on line at: http://www.scottishriteonline.org/ or from the Valley of Syracuse Business office.

Note: These directions MUST be followed without exception. Failure to follow these instructions will result in the rejection of your application.

All applicants MUST be completing one or more years of college study to be considered. Incoming college Freshmen students are not eligible for consideration in New York State.

Only application acceptable for use is the “Current 2011 scholarship Application”. Application forms from previous years will be rejected and will not be considered.

All applications must be received in the Valley of Syracuse office no later than March 24, 2011 to be considered.

All applications must be submitted in duplicate [two (2) copies of the entire package is required]

All applications must include two (2) copies of the following information: At least one confidential letter of recommendation, the most current college transcript and the most current copy of the FAFSA form.

Students must have a minimum G.P.A. of 2.75 to qualify for consideration.

Recognition and Awards Nights Honors Valley Achievers

Following a delicious dinner served by Centerville Chapter #185; we all moved the evening’s festivities into our Lodge Room and the program for the evening was underway.This was the night for the Valley to recognize its achievers and Past and present leaders for their dedication to Scottish Rite.

Eleven Scottish Riters were recognized for fifty years and seventeen were recognized sixty years of membership in the Valley of Syracuse; can you believe one thousand and five hundred and ten years of Scottish Membership and experiences was represented by this group of Brothers.

Next group recognized were thirty new Scottish Rite members in our latest classes of new members. Patents of membership from Supreme Council were presented to the Brothers.
Our Valley is blessed with dedicated Brothers who lead our members each year. The Junior Past Thrice Potent Master; Adam A. Ferguson, 32° and Junior Past Most Wise Master Richard P. Freeman, 32° were presented certificates of appreciation and accomplishments for their years of service as Officers in the Valley.

Two Brothers were nominated to receive the Valley of Syracuse’s “Legion of Valor’ award in 2010. Our recipients for 2010 are Brothers Kevin M. Cobb, 32°, DSA and Richard R. Freeman, 32° received certificates of recognition for their years of dedication to their families and the Craft.

Two Brothers recognized by the Valley with election to receive the Valley of Syracuse Dedicated Service Award for 2010 were recognized next in our program. Brothers Milo J. Peterson, 32°DSA and Richard M. Torrey, 32° DSA were presented Blue Hats by their wives and the Commander-in-Chief Ill\ Sandy F. Samson, 33°.

We are extremely proud to have a new Honorary Member of Supreme Council coroneted this year in Philadelphia. PA. In recognition of this achievement Ill\ John R. Fuller, 33°, President of the Central City Thirty-third Degree Club presented the Thirty-Third Degree Jewel to Ill\ Lynwood J. Bennerson, 33°, Central City Consistory First lieutenant Commander.

Ill\ Peter J. Samiec, 33°, Active Member of Supreme Council was the key note speaker for the festivities of the evening.

Notes from the CNY Learning Center
Welcome to MY World

Wow- how time flies!!! We are nearing the end of the fall session of our program; the scholars have completed most of their classroom sessions but have the majority of their practicum ahead of them.

We had the pleasure of having Carin Illig, the director of the academic side of the Learning Centers at headquarters in Lexington, MA, visit us mid-November. She joined us for our Board Meeting and spent an evening and a day at the Center meeting with parents and staff and observing tutors and scholars. It was nice for the Board and staff to meet with her face to face and for her to see our Center in action. I will let you know the results of her “review” when we receive it.

Bryce continues to move forward in his progress. He has moved forward into level two and due to his age and grade, he is also working on what is considered Advanced Material which deals with grammar and word origins. His tutor has also been able to accommodate Bryce’s schedule which has allowed him to join the school's bowling team!
We know how important the reading is for our children but keeping grades that allow them to enter sports as well is another great accomplishment.

My Brothers, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving have passed and Hanukkah and Christmas are upon us. These holidays are my favorites. Not only do we take time to share with family and friends the things that are really important in life but we also have the opportunity to remember how important it is to give thanks for the men and women who fight to protect our homes, families and our freedom as well as give thanks for the blessings the Great Creator has given us. The season also serves as a reminder of the responsibility we have as men and Masons to remember those who are less fortunate than us and assist as our abilities and resources permit.
Our Chapter of Rose Croix, under the leadership of Brother Allan Ferguson Most Wise Master, has put together a wonderful Holiday Program which will take place Monday, December 13th. Social hour will begin at 6:00, dinner at 6:30 with the program to follow. Please make every effort to attend so that we may all celebrate the spirit of family and brotherhood.

Chapter Rose Croix

Brethren, I hope you are noticing the changes taking place on this page. The officers of the four bodies in our Valley are deliberately trying to tell you that Scottish Rite Freemasonry is both changing and honoring our traditions. Yes, we will announce the upcoming activities. Yes, we will thank the Brothers who put their skills and energy into conferring degrees and performing other programs. But there is more to this Valley than what we do in the temple (which Scottish Rite Masons call a cathedral), and there is more to the Scottish Rite than our degrees. I am like many, if not most, officers in Masonry. I hold another title in the Valley of Syracuse: Hospitaler. With that said, this is one of my last columns as Most Wise Master of Central City Chapter of Rose Croix. Instead, this space can help the Valley better by sharing with our members the work of the Hospitaler.

The Hospitaler does collect money at our meetings to help Brothers in distress. The Hospitaler and his partners also can and should do more, like visit Brothers who are in nursing homes or hospitalized. We know there are Brothers who would appreciate hearing the voice of another person, particularly that of a Brother Scottish Rite Mason.

I invite you to join me in making this fraternity stronger by visiting a Brother who has been confined to his home or lives in a nursing home. You can send me a note about your visit to share in this column. If you cannot visit someone yourself, send me an E-mail about a Brother you know would like a visit. Council Princes of Jerusalem

Brethren, Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

The Veteran's Day Program was exceptional this year. Brother Tom Santmyer hosted the event and, as usual, he did a “bang up” job. The two Masonic veterans and the one non-Masonic veteran that were honored exemplified the qualities found in the Armed Forces of the United States, past and present. The Commander-in-Chief of the Valley personally presented the evening's entertainment, “The Ring that went around the World”, instead of having a Guest Speaker. It was riveting and a sobering reminder of how far, and deep, the Masonic Fraternity permeates this world.

Occurring in this coming month on December 13 is the Holiday Celebration to be held at the Masonic Memorial Center in North Syracuse. I hope you have sent in your reservations. It will be a nice night out before the frenzy of shopping begins ! It is my hope that all have a safe and enjoyable Holiday Season. And, as always, keep in mind the safety and well being of our active military as we go into this Holiday Season.

Veteran’s Celebration – November 8, 2010

The evening gathering set aside to honor our Veterans was opened with a hearty welcome by Bro. Thomas Santmyer, 32º, Thrice Potent Master of the Central City Lodge of Perfection. Bro. Allan Ferguson, 32°, Most Wise Master of the Central City Chapter of Rose Croix , gave the invocation. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Bro. Thomas Santmyer, 32°. Ill.˙. Bruce Ackerman presented the POW-MIA Tableau and remembrance. A Baked Ziti dinner, prepared by Centerville Chapter 185, OES was served to 66 guests.

After dinner, members, accompanied by their ladies, retired to the lodge room for the Veterans’ Recognition Ceremony and a special program presentation of “The Ring That Went Round The World”. This presentation, given by the members of the Valley of Syracuse, was a “tribute to and an emotional rendition of Patriotism, Heroism, and Masonic Brotherhood to those who have given their lives in service to their Country and to those who returned.” The presentation was the true story of Brother Truman Charles Toby, a member of Cortland Lodge #470 and a World War I veteran. Bro Allan Ferguson offered the prelude as well as the benediction, brevities were given by Ill.˙. David Spencer, 33°, Active Member and Ill.˙. Peter Samiec, 33°, Active Member and Deputy for New York.

This year, there were two recipients of The Masonic Veteran of the Year Award. This year’s recipients were S.P. Robert T. Mantia, 32° and D.B. Daniel L. Clark, 32°,MSA. Dr. Samuel L. Forcucci was presented the Non Masonic Veteran of the Year award for his duty to his country as a non-Mason.

The evening was a quiet remembrance of those who gave the ultimate. Most of them have come home to receive our honor and thanks, but we still remember those who, apparently gave the ultimate, but haven’t been brought home. It was also a time of thanksgiving, for those who have come home and could be with us, as well as those still fighting. Only three men were honored at our celebration, but in our hearts those awards could be given to every man and women who has or is serving our country now. The back page of the program included a writing of Father Denis Edward O’Brien, USMC, entitled “What is a Vet?” It is a very well written, thought provoking definition of what is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces.

Valley Secretary Retires

D.B. George W. Black, 32°, MSA typed his last article and attended his last Valley meeting as the Secretary of the four Bodies in our Valley on October 31, 2010.

Unfortunately for the Valley, George’s health condition has contributed heavily to his decision to retire as our Secretary a few months earlier than he planned. When re-elected last May, George commented then that this was the last time he was planning to run for the Secretary’s position.
Unfortunately, he was not able to finish his term of office.

All of the Officers and Members in the Valley wish him well in his retirement and we all pray that his health will improve. He served his Valley well as our Secretary and the Valley’s leader’s through those seven years extend him much gratitude and many thanks for his dedicated assistance and support.

George, you are always welcome to attend any Valley function that your health allows.
We all thank you for your efforts on behalf of the Valley.

Learning Center Attains Fundraising Goal

It was an amazing day—rain was predicted but never came-the sun showed early and made the day enjoyable- and the Fifth Annual Timothy O’Connor-Slater Walk for Dyslexia had the biggest crowd of participants who enjoyed their three or five K walk along the old Erie Canal footpath that runs along Route 69.

Members of North Woods Lodge #849 F&AM, Old Forge arrived early in the morning to begin fires for the chicken Bbq held at noon in the pavilion on the Eastern Star Campus.

Dewey Old Forge #449 OES members prepared and served the dinner consisting of potato salad, ½ chicken, baked beans, roll, dessert, coffee, tea, iced tea, or lemonade provided by Stewarts Shops

And the overall result - fundraising goal attained!

On behalf of the Board of Governors for Central New York 32° Masonic Learning Center for Children, we thank all who participated physically, financially, and tirelessly to help us attain our goal for this year. We hope to see you again next year and at future events. We are indebted to Mary and Tom Lindsey for their work on the program booklet.

The Central City Chapter of Rose Croix will confer the 17th Degree on October 18, 2010 at 7:00 PM at Masonic Memorial Temple. We will gather for a light meal of pizza and fellowship before the degree commences at 7:30 PM.

There are two reasons you should want to attend this degree:

1. The cast includes several brothers new to this valley, knightedSublime Princes within the past 2 or 3 years. These brothers are learninghow to be part of this valley by taking part in the valley’s work.

2. This degree is not one of the required degrees we see often. Thelast time it was offered in this valley was in 2005. Brothers who want tocomplete their passport will want to make an effort to attend.

As our 2009-2010 year comes to an end, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank all who contributed in some way in having made the year the success it was.

While I’m sure that I will miss thanking someone, kudos to our Body Heads Brothers Adam Ferguson, Milo Peterson and Dick Freeman for their outstanding dedication and fine programs. My officers, Lynwood Bennerson, Bob Tyrrell, Rick Powell and Garry Visconte for all their support (especially to Lynwood for being my strong right hand).

We bid our Administrative Assistant Linda Mantea our best wishes upon her retirement. I especially appreciate all that she had done for our Scottish rite Valley.
A special thank you to our immediate past Commander-In-Chief Craig Cobb for chairing our Learning Center walk-a-thon and directing our 31st and 32nd degree (and much more).

I would also be remiss if I did not thank Brother Allan Ferguson for accepting the position of Hospitaler. He is doing a great job.

There a many others (including our Deputy’s Representative and the 33rds of the Valley) who were always willing to do what it is that I asked them to do.

Also, I had the pleasure of announcing the Valley’s 2010 DSA (Distinguished Service Award recipients Brothers Rich Torrey and Milo Peterson along with our Valley’s Legion of Valor recipients Brothers Dick Freeman and Kevin Cobb. They will be formally recognized at our annual Awards and Recognition dinner.

In my last article, I noticed the wrong date listed for our Veterans day celebration. It is planned for Monday November 8th. Please mark your calendars accordingly.

We are a good Valley doing good things but we need to strive to go from good to great. During this coming new term, we will all continue to strengthen the fraternal bonds of friendship and brotherhood among each and every one of you while making every effort to address those opportunities that lay before us.

Greetings Brethren, On behalf of the Chapter of Rose Croix, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Valley of Syracuse for the privilege of being Most Wise Master.

It has been a pleasure working with Adam and Milo. I want to say thank you to all of the Members of our Line for your help this past year, this includes George and Linda in the Office.

I need to say a special thanks to Bob Tyrrell, and assure him that my recruiting efforts will stay on track. As for the Commander in Chief…Sandy, what can I say, This has been such an Honor to a part of this.

Last, I want to thank Dianne for her support in my year as MWM. I will be leaving the Chapter in the very capable hands of the Rev. Allan Ferguson, a true Scotsman indeed.

The events began on the 10th of May with the Guards Club Dinner and Annual Meeting. The Council Princes of Jerusalem slate of Officers for the coming year has been defined as: Sov. Prince: Milo Peterson; High Priest: David Barnello; Senior Warden: Michael Cassavaw; Junior Warden: Carl Fahrenkrug, Jr; Master of Ceremonies: Robert Boutell; Master of Entrances: Kevin Cobb. I believe these Officers will perform their duties with diligence. Public installation of Officers will be on June 7.

The 17th Degree was scheduled for the 17th of May; however a replacement program was presented instead. The evening was hosted by the Chapter of Rose Croix. It was an informative presentation and an enjoyable evening of fraternization. That is what I really enjoy about the Scottish Rite, it is all about morality instruction and enjoyment of the brotherhood.

The coming month of June will end our year with the Public Installation of the Officers for the coming year on June 7, and then, Summer will be upon us. I hope that everyone will have an enjoyable and safe Summer Season.

Greetings from the Lodge of Perfection!

As I write this article, I have much to reflect upon from this past year, both Masonic and personal.

As if the duties of Thrice Potent Master were not going to be enough of a challenge, I undertook a return to Syracuse University this past August. By the time this goes to press, I will have graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English and Textual Studies.

To that end, my deepest and heartfelt thanks goes to Sandy Samson, Dick Freeman, and Milo Peterson - a wonderful team of colleagues and presiding officers. I also send my deepest thanks and appreciation to my Deputy, Tom Santmeyer - your work was appreciated and I wish you the best for your coming year.

A huge thank you goes to my officers, both official and drafted; and to each of the degree teams it was my pleasure to work with. A personal debt of thanks goes to George Black and Linda Mantia in the office who did their level best to make me look good, and last but not least to my family - you all have supported me and made me believe that I could have and do it all.

I am pleased to announce that Reverend and Brother Allan Ferguson has agreed to take the position of Hospitaler for the Valley of Syracuse. Lest we forget” We are starting to plan for the 6th annual Valley of Syracuse, Veteran’s Day Dinner and Awards Ceremony which will be held on November 9th. The Valley is now accepting nominations for Veteran of the year for both a Mason and non Mason who has served with distinction during a period of military conflict or in a war. The Masonic Vet should be an active member in good standing. The non Masonic vet should be of high character and one who contributes to the community.
Nominations should be forwarded to Thomas E. Santmyer, Jr., 1345 Oak St, Syracuse NY 13203 or to Masonic Memorial Center, AASR Office, 648 Centerville Place, North Syracuse, NY 13212-2366. Greetings Brethren, On behalf of the Chapter of Rose Croix, I hope everyone that is planning on going to New Jersey for the 23 Degree has been successful in getting a ride, and made reservations. I am very excited about this venture. The USS New Jersey is so rich in Naval history. I plan on getting all of the information I can on this trip. It will make a great presentation in Lodge some night.

Tim McMullin, MSA, and currently Most Wise Master, from The Valley of Binghamton and his “crew” are planning on coming to Syracuse and doing the 17th Degree for us on May 17th. In the event that they have to cancel, an alternative program will be substituted.

This year is winding down fast, and our summer will fly by even faster. On membership, now is the time for us to be lining up new Candidates. September will be here before we know it, and it would be a great send off for our new Officers to present them with a large Class.

Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

The month of April included the presentation of the 31st and 32nd degrees at Utica and was hosted by the Valley of Utica. The degrees presented in concert with another Valley, in a different lodge setting, is always interesting and exposes the members and the candidates to a taste of the breadth and depth of the our fraternity. A hearty welcome to the new members of the 32nd degree. The Reunion Dinner also occurred in the month of April. This dinner includes the wives and other guests. It was, as usual, an enjoyable event.

The month of May will kickoff with a rehearsal for the presentation of the 17th degree. Rehearsals are very important in order to present the degree in the best way possible on the night of the event. This is a degree that has not been presented before by this Valley. The cast has put a lot into this effort and I hope there is a good member turnout to experience the degree. The degree will be presented the night of May 17th.

May 10th is the Guards Club Dinner and Annual Meeting. This event is always enjoyable and informative. I look forward to seeing you there.

Learning Center Walk-A-Thon 2010

Do you walk the talk? What talk you ask? What walk you ask? Walk-A-Thon 2010 will be held on September 25, 2010. Walk-A-Thon 2010 will start at the Scottish Rite Learning Center for Children in Oriskany, NY with registration 9:00-10:00AM, followed by the start of Walk-A-Thon at 10:00AM. Pizza and drinks for all will be served at 11:30AM.

You say you do not know where Oriskany NY is located. Not a problem. Oriskany is the home of the OES (Order of the Eastern Star) and is located between Rome and Utica off NYS Thruway Exit 32 (Westmoreland). Oriskany is located on Route 69 and the Scottish Rite Learning Center for Children is located on the West side of the OES Home. If you get lost in Oriskany NY someone will help you find the OES Home and the Learning Center.

What’s in it for me? Helping children learn to read who have very serious challenges (dyslexia). Helping children improve their self esteem. Helping children be the best that they can be. Is that important to you? Absolutely if you are a Scottish Riter!

Please join your fellow Scottish Riters and other interested parties in helping Central New York children challenged with dyslexia (difficulty learning to read). Please reserve September 25, 2010 on your busy calendar for Walk-A-Thon 2010.

Are you taking advantage of the value your Scottish Rite membership provides for you and your family?

Do you know that sons, daughters and grandchildren of Scottish Rite Masons who are attending an accredited college can apply for a Scottish Rite scholarship? Go to the Scottish Rite website www.scottishriteonline.org and click “Philanthropy” for information and an application. While we cannot guarantee that all applications will result in the receipt of a scholarship we can guarantee that all applications are considered.

Please be mindful that applications require letters of references and transcripts and are expected to be submitted in duplicate to our office no later than March 15th. Give our Secretary (George Black) a call at 315-452-7976 if you would like further clarification or information. Please remember that the applicant must be currently enrolled and will be at least a Sophomore in the fall of 2010.

Another added value of membership is the fellowship our Valley’s programs offer. On February 08th, our Chapter will host our annual Sweetheart’s dinner. Our very own Brother Allan Ferguson and his wife Linda will provide the entertainment for the evening. Hope to see you there.

We are beneficiaries of a number of brothers who volunteer their time and talents for the betterment of our Valley. Brother Milo Peterson is working with George and Linda in helping our office to utilize the new computer system to its fullest extent. One of our new members, Brother Ryan Boyle has volunteered to take part in our degrees. Brother Bob Tyrrell is heading up our Membership Efforts. Brother Mike Gates replaced Charlie Gray as our Valley’s Treasurer and is doing a great job. And our immediate past Commander-In-Chief Brother Craig Cobb is always there for us.

Greetings Brethren from the Chapter of Rose Croix . Its that time of year again. You guessed it, The Sweetheart’s Program!! Mark your calendar for February 8th, and plan on treating the Ladies to dinner and some entertainment. The Social hour begins at 6:00pm, with a roast beef dinner at 6:30. Our entertainment that evening will feature our very own, the Reverend Allan J. Ferguson and his Lovely Wife Linda. They will be performing on an assortment of musical instruments for our listening pleasure.

On membership, I want to give a big ATTABOY to Rick Powell for the fine job he does updating the Blogsite. Last month an army sergeant stationed at Fort Drum read my article for new members online. He requested 6 applications which were immediately sent. I will keep you posted on any developments.

Attendance for the Membership Night with the Ladies event held on January 11th was a little under par. This was due no doubt to the weather finally kicking in to present us with a “makeup” series of snowstorms taking us into the Central New York winter. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate in the month of February such that attendance at events will be better.

We need to engage the candidates and the recent brethren who have joined the ranks of the 32nd Degree by promoting participation and attendance in the events to come on the schedule.

The Sweethearts's program is to occur on February 8th and the 10th Degree is to be confered on February 22nd. Reservations need to be made in a timely fashion for events that include dinners.

Our new members need to be made aware of this as the reservations are extremely important in order to plan for the events.

WOW! 2010 !!

Who would have thought the first 4 ½ years at the Center would have flown by so quickly. As you all know a lot has happened in and around the Center as well as in Lexington. Thanks to all of you, we are still here and continuing to do the work we do so well.We are barely back from the Christmas holiday break but everything is getting back to “normal.”

Remember how things were for Jeffrey after our Thanksgiving break? You can imagine how difficult it has been for him (and many other children) to get back in the groove after an even longer break. Fortunately for Jeffrey and all the children, we have very dedicated and talented tutors and scholars who are constantly seeking new ways to help reinforce and teach the needed sounds and concepts. We may have some ‘bad days’ at the Center, but no one gives up!!!

There will be a great deal of review and reinforcement going on as we work through the long winter.There are always new and interesting things happening at the Center. We are hoping to have our new Website up to date and in full swing before long. Since that form of technology is not Sandy's or my strong point we must rely on the skills of others who have offered to donate precious time from their busy lives to assist us. As always, feel free to give us a call or stop in when we are here (1-6 PM Mon-Th unless the schools are closed). We would love to hear from you and appreciate everything you do to keep us going.

As we gather together with friends and family during this holiday season, may we always remain mindful of the real “Reason for the Season”.

Let us remember those who may not be as fortunate as we. Perhaps it is a soldier stationed in a far away land placing his or her life in harms way so that we may have the freedom to worship and celebrate this season according to the dictates of our own conscience. Perhaps it is a brother or a widow of a brother who lives alone, or is confined in a hospital and would welcome a kind note or call. How about the young family members of our fraternal brotherhood who are attending college and may be struggling with financing their education. Perhaps it is the young boy or girl challenged with a learning disability and believes that no one understands or cares. Maybe it’s a young out of work family who does not have the resources to celebrate Christmas the way you and I will.

When we sit down this December and begin to make out the labels for the multitude of gifts we are planning to give and begin drafting the menus for our bountiful holiday dinner tables, let us pause and take a moment to: call a homebound or hospitalized brother and sister, send a brother a thoughtful holiday greeting, post a letter to a solder letting him or her know that we care. Let us put our loose change into the Salvation Army’s red kettle. Let us also consider making a donation (of any amount) to our Scottish Rite Charities so that we may continue our youth scholarships and sponsor our children’s learning centers.

But most important of all, Let us always remember to give Thanks, each and every day, to Him who has blest our Country, our Families, our Fraternity, ourselves, and who has given us the greatest gifts of all, His love, His understanding, His Mercy and His Spirit.

Once again I would like to start by shouting, Membership, Membership!!, We had several new members receiving their 32 Degree last month at Utica, but we need to keep the new applicants coming. Our Valley needs new members to keep all of our great programs moving forward. In the Cortland / Madison, District see Freddie Liehs or myself if any one needs an application, literature, or someone to visit your Lodge and do a program on Scottish Rite.

Congratulations again to all the recipients of awards at the Recognition and Awards Night event of November 23rd. They richly deserved to be recognized.

And, a hearty “Welcome Aboard” to all the new Scottish Rite 32nd degree members.

The month of December contains only one event. That being, the Holiday Celebration at the Lodge on December 14th. Remember to make your reservations early and attend this event.

The following is background on another of the Officers of the Council Princes of Jerusalem. Brother Carl F. Fahrenkrug, Jr. 32º is serving as the Master Of Ceremonies in the Council this year.

He is an active Mason in Fayetteville Lodge # 305. He was raised as a Master Mason in 2005. He acquired his 32nd degree in 2006.

Carl has resided in the Syracuse area all of his life, is married to Susan and has three children. His oldest daughter Calista is 11, stepson Josh is 9 and youngest daughter Morgan is 1 and one-half years old.

Carl is presently employed as the Vice President of Manufacturing at Microwave Filter Company located in East Syracuse, New York. He obtained his BSEE from Clarkson University, MSEE from Binghamton University and his MBA from LeMoyne College. He has acquired his EIT (Engineering in Training) certificate and is currently working towards acquiring his PE license. He is working towards certification for Lean Six Sigma Black Belt from RIT and PMP (Project Management Professional. He is also a graduate of 2005 Leadership Greater Syracuse, Dale Carnegie and an IEEE member.

Lynwood Bennerson to Receive 33° in 2010

At the 2009 Annual Meeting of the Supreme Council of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, Bro. Lynwood Bennerson, 32°, was elected to receive the 33° to be awarded att the 2010 Meeting.

Born in Manhattan, raised and educated in Queens, NY, Lynwood accepted a Senatorial Nomination to the Air Force Academy to begin his collegiate career. After receiving a B.A. in Biology at Queens College, he entered in a post baccalaureate program at C.W. Post Center of Long Island University where his field of research was Sickle Cell Anemia. Prior to completing his work, Lynwood left to pursue his dental degree. He received his doctorate in dentistry from New York University College of Dentistry in 1980. From 1980 to 1982 he was Chief Resident at Columbia University in New York, at Harlem Hospital.

Prior to relocating to the Syracuse area in 1991, Lynwood practiced general dentistry not only in private practice, but also worked for the Public Health Department of NYC. Before starting his own practice on the Syracuse University campus in 1993, he worked in a large clinic in Syracuse. In addition to his private practice, he is also on faculty at NYU College of Dentistry as Clinical Professor Department of Cariology and Comprehensive Care, as well as Adjunct Professor, Department of Biomedical Sciences, CWPost Campus, Long Island University. In addition, he is the director for the NYU College of Dentistry Outreach Program to Grenada, and is a member of the Board of Admissions.

Lynwood was raised on April 21, 1998 at Fayetteville-Central City Lodge #305 and was Master of the Lodge 2003 – 2004. He received his 32nd degree in the fall of 1998 at the Masonic Memorial Center. He served as Most Wise Master of Chapter Rose Croix in 2001 – 2002. He also holds dual membership with Military Lodge #91. Lynwood also is a member of York Rite, Central City Commandry #25, Shrine and the Order of the Eastern Star. He has held various seats in the organizations, including Patron of Centerville Chapter #185 Order of Eastern Star in 2008.

While living in New York City, Lynwood was a member of Starlight Lodge #13, Prince Hall, Hiram International. He started work in the Fall of 1987 and was raised in 1988.

Lynwood and his wife of 32years, Denise, live in Manlius, N.Y. They are parents of two children, Anthony, who lives in Manhattan and Ashley who lives in Buffalo, NY. When not involved in Masonic or professional activities, Lynwood enjoys listening to jazz, and traveling. One of his greatest loves is to relax on his deck, listen to some quiet jazz and watch the sun set.

My Brothers,
One of the true “secrets” of our Fraternity is the power Masonry has in influencing people and events when Masons live their liveS according to the teachings and tenants of our fraternity.

I am pleased to announce a new honor that will be bestowed by myself and future Commander-In-Chiefs to brothers who have unknowingly had a tremendous influence upon the Commander-In-Chief through the powerful example the brother has set by their actions and deeds.

This honor is called the Legion of Valor and will be bestowed upon two brothers each year at our Valley’s annual Recognition and Awards night. I am proud to announce that this year’s recipients are Charles Victory and James McNeal.

Our Awards and Recognition night will be held on Monday, November 23rd. The social starts at 6:00, dinner at 6:30 with the program to follow. On this night, we will also be recognizing Brothers Rick Powell, Norm Kruth and Harley DeShane as our new Dedicated Service Award Recipients and Brother George Black will be presented his Red Hat as our Valley’s newest Meritorious Service award recipient. Illustrious Brother Peter Samiec 33rd, State Deputy will be our guest speaker and will be presenting diplomas to our newest members.

On Monday, Nov. 09th, we will be hosting our annual Veterans program which is being chaired by Brother Tom Santmyer. (Social at 6:00, dinner at 6:30 with program to follow). This evening will be a most memorable night and our opportunity to honor those who have served our country. Special recognition will be given to Brother Arnold Zilm from Homer.

Saturday, Nov. 14th is our Scottish Rite Day. The event will be held in Utica with the conferral of the 31st and 32nd degrees in the morning and lunch to follow. If you would like transportation call George at 315-452-7976.

The following is background information on Brother David Barnello, 32nd degree.
David is serving as the Junior Warden in the Council this year. He is also an active Mason that was raised in the Cato Lodge #131 where he is presently serving in the position of Junior Warden.

He has been in the service of his community in his association with the Boy Scouts of America in Cato and Cayuga County for 20 years. He is approaching his 15th year as Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 50. He is an Honor Scouter, a member of many committees and has earned the prestigious Silver Beaver Award.

He is an employee of Microwave Filter Company for many years and serves as the Mechanical Operations Manager. Dave and his wife Ann live on a small farm in Cato where they have raised two fine sons and a variety of animals of which some have tried the patience of Ann. This Masonic thought was shared with us as we embarked on our travels in Masonry and is most meaningful today as we continue to strive to add value to your Scottish Rite membership.

During the 2009-2010 year, your Officers will be actively evaluating our Trestleboard and programs and we would welcome your thoughts, ideas and suggestions. Your input is needed and appreciated.

Congratulations to our 1st Lt. Commander, Brother Lynwood Bennerson who has been elected to receive the 33rd degree next year at Supreme Council. Brother Bennerson is a tremendous individual and Mason and deserves our hearty congratulations.

I received an email from brother Lawrence Hamilton who now resides in Colorado. He recently received his certificate for 50 years of membership in Scottish Rite. I thoroughly enjoyed reading his communication and would encourage other members to update me on their activities. Brother Hamilton is a shut-in so our thoughts should be with him.

Upcoming Events:
Saturday morning October 17th we will be conferring the 4th and 14th degrees with lunch afterwards. More details to follow.
Monday, October 26th, we will confer the 4th degree at 7:30 p.m. (no dinner) in the evening on any candidates who are unable to attend on Saturday. If none, there will be a program.

Brethren,
Greetings from the Council Princes of Jerusalem.

October will be a month of introduction to the Scottish Rite of those Masons who have decided to begin the journey in the Rite. It is up to us to insure that it starts off on the right foot to correctly guide them on the path.

The introductory degrees of the 4th and 14th degrees are the first steps in this effort. We must present these degrees as professionally as we can. Rehearsal of the two degrees is scheduled for October 12th. It would behoove the cast members to attend the rehearsal whether you are an “old” or a “new” member of the cast. Practice makes perfect.

The 4th and 14th degrees are scheduled for presentation on October 17th and a repeat performance of the 4th degree is scheduled for October 26th. If at all possible, we should come out and attend these degrees. The candidates need all the support they can get. The faces in attendance at those degrees counts a lot in spiritual support.

I was to present information on another of the Officers of the Council in this report. But, it would be remiss of me not to thank all those that supported the NYS Child ID program on August 30. Thus I will use this alloted space to thank those Brothers and others in the community that volunteered their time and effort in support of the program. Greetings Brethren,

On behalf of the Chapter of Rose Croix, I would like to say thank you to all of my friends, family, and all of the volunteers that helped staff the Masonic Child ID Booth on Sunday August 30th at the State Fair. We did IDs for approximately 75 children and Senior citizens that evening.

It was recently announced that Lynwood J. Bennerson has been selected to receive the 33rd Degree. Our congratulations to Lynwood on his achievement to this Illustrious position.

October will be a very busy month in the Valley of Syracuse. There are five scheduled dates, that include, Executive Committee (that all may attend) 10/5, Rehearsal on 10/12, the 4th and 14 Degree on 10/17, the 4th Degree again on 10/26 (or program), and an Officer’s Planning meeting on 10/27. Please check your calendars and mark these dates.

I would like to share some background information on the Officers of the Chapter with you, beginning with our Senior Warden, Rev. Allan J. Ferguson. Allan is a native of Watertown, N.Y. and currently resides in Homer. He has recently retired as the Minister from the United Methodist Church. He and his wife Linda have been married since 1976, and have one son. Their son, Adam, is the Thrice Potent Master of the Central City Lodge of Perfection. Allan has been the Past Master of Cortlandville Lodge #470, and is currently serving as Secretary. He is also Commander of Cortland Commandery #50, member of Washington Chapter RAM, and active in the Valley of Syracuse. Of special note, he went through his Master Mason degrees and Scottish Rite with his son. Allan enjoys fishing, camping, cycling, and amateur radio. He also plays bagpipes and banjo, and is a published military historian and theologian.

Greetings from the Lodge of Perfection!

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who volunteered and showed up at the Child ID booth at the New York State Fair. We had a great deal of fun, and for a very worthy cause.

Preparations continue for the 4th and 14th degrees for the Scottish Rite celebration in November, as well as for the 10th degree in the spring.

I look forward to meeting with the members, soon to be members, and the brothers who are simply interested in joining Scottish Rite over the coming months. Our Valley has so much to offer, and it is up to us as individual brothers to put our best foot (and face) forward.

Greetings Brothers,
I want to thank each and every one of you for the faith and confidence you have placed in me by electing me as your Consistory’s Commander-In-Chief. I am excited about the opportunities that lie before and pledge to you that I will do my very best to assist in the promotion and growth of our Valley and our Rite.

With those thoughts in mind, I want to bring to your attention an exciting opportunity to bring new members to our Scottish Rite. Our Sovereign Grand Commander has announced a Scottish Rite Day scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 14th. On this day, any Brother who has obtained the 4th degree can receive his 31st and 32nd degrees on that day.

To support this effort and encourage Master Masons to join Scottish rite, our Valley will be conferring the 4th and 14th degrees on Saturday morning, October 17th in our Masonic Memorial Center. We have also scheduled a 4th degree for Monday, October 26th for those who can’t make on that Saturday. We will schedule more 4th degrees if needed.

I would ask each and every one of you, to think of someone that you believe would be interested in taking advantage of this convenient opportunity to become a member. Bring him to our Kick off and Brother Bring a Brother Night scheduled for Monday, September 14th.

IMPORTANT EVENT: Our annual Walk-A-Thon which is sponsored by the Valleys of Syracuse and Utica will be held on Saturday September 26th. The event will be held at the OES Home at Oriskany, NY and will begin at 10: a.m. The proceeds raised go directly towards helping support our CNY 32nd Degree Children’s learning center. I hope everybody enjoyed our “Summer”, wet though it was.

The Child ID Program at the NYS Fair on Aug 30 as always is lot of fun and it performs a vital service to the community at large.

The Kickoff and bring a Brother dinner on Sept 14 is an event that is enjoyable and informative. Come out and mingle with the Brothers and be introduced to some of the Masonic brothers that are showing an interest in becoming Scottish Riters. If you know a Masonic brother that may be interested, contact George Black, Secretary, at the Scottish Rite Office. We should all attempt to support and attend this event.

Let us not forget to support and/or attend the Walk-a-thon in Oriskany on Sept 26.

The Illustrious Gary Hartman is serving as High Priest this year. Gary retired in 2008 from the NBC3/CW6 TV stations in Syracuse., where he was Assistant Chief Engineer. He was licensed by the FCC as a First Class Radiotelephone Operator and is certified by the Society of Broadcast Engineers Professional Engineer. He was made a Fellow of the SBE in 2006, one of only 64 members so honored in the history of the organization. He is Past Chair of SBE CNY Chapter 22, where he is current Frequency Coordinator and Exhibitor Relations chair for the SBE22 Broadcast & Technology Expo. An active Mason, he was elevated to the rank of 33rd Degree in 2002. He is Past Commander-in-Chief of the Valley of Syracuse and serves on the NYS Masonic Charities Committee. He sits on the Board of Governors and is a Trustee of the CNY 32nd Degree Learning Center. He is a Past Master as well as past District Deputy Grand Master of the Onondaga District. Fall Kickoff Dinner

The Valley of Syracuse’s fall 2009 Kickoff and Bring a Brother Dinner is Monday, September 14, 2009 at the Masonic Memorial Center, 648 Centerville Place, North Syracuse, New York. Fellowship and snacks will begin at 6:00 p.m. followed by a delicious steak dinner at 7:00 p.m. The caterers will be, as usual, the Fellowcraft Club from Memorial Lodge.

Dress will be casual. Join us for a good time and share the great fellowship by bringing a Master Mason, as a Guest of the Valley, to introduce them to Scottish Rite Masonry.

Price for the event will be $20.00 for members of the Valley of Syracuse.

Brother Sandy Samson, 33°, Commander in Chief, will lead a Leadership Retreat, hosted by the Valley of Syracuse, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite on Saturday, June 13th at the Cortlandville Masonic Temple, 1883 State Route 13, Cortland, NY. Peter J. Samiec, 33°, Deputy for New York will be our special guest for the day.

Registration will start at 8:15 AM with opening ceremonies beginning at 8:50 AM. Lunch will be provided at or around 12:15 PM. Attire is business casual and there is no cost.

The event will prove beneficial to all who attend and will provide you with an opportunity to meet and greet a number of Masonic Leaders from the Central New York area.

The Annual Guard’s Club Dinner will be held in the dining room of the Masonic Memorial Center, 648 Centerville Place, North Syracuse, New York on Monday, May 11, 2009 at 6:30 p.m..

This dinner is sponsored by Central City Bodies, A.A.S.R., Valley of Syracuse as a token of appreciation for all those who took part in or worked on any Degrees. This includes all Officers, members of the Degree Casts, Stage Hands, Wardrobe, Make-up, and all others who helped in any way.

We begin with a social hour at 6:00 p.m. and enjoy a roast beef dinner at 6:30 p.m. A program in the Lodge Room will follow dinner. The speaker for the evening will be D.B. Stephen C. Park, 32º, MSA, Chairman of the Board of Governors for the Central New York 32º Masonic Learning Center for Children in Oriskany, New York.

Make your reservation with the Scottish Rite office, and mail your check payable to Central City Bodies, A.A.S.R.. The cost of the dinner will be $16.00 per person.

We must have your reservation by April 22, 2009 to insure you have a seat at dinner.

The 24º, 31º and 32º will be presented on Saturday, April 18, 2009 starting at 10:00 a.m. in Utica, NY. The address for the Scottish Rite in Utica is 251 E. Genesee Street.

A bus will depart from the Masonic Memorial Center, 648 Centerville Place, North Syracuse, NY at 8:00 a.m that morning.

Reservations for the bus and degree luncheon should be made by Monday, April 13, 2009 by calling the Scottish Rite office at 452-7976, Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. or leave a message on the answering machine.

Cost of lunch will be $7.00 per person.

Feast of the Paschal Lamb

The ceremony of the Feast of the Paschal Lamb will be conducted on Monday evening, April 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Lodge room of the Masonic Memorial Center, 648 Centerville Place, North Syracuse, New York.

This is the annual memorial service for Scottish Rite brothers who have died during the preceding year and includes the moving ritual of the extinguishing and relighting of the lights. It provides an opportunity to reaffirm our faith and recall our departed brothers as their names are recited.

I cordially invite you, your family and friends to join us on April 6, 2009 as we reaffirm our faith and honor those who have gone before us. A reception will be held in the dining room following the ceremony.
